About:

Cries for help. Maneuvering through carnage. Wails of heartbreak from grieving loved ones. Being held at gunpoint. These are all instances that the average individual would equate with the “worst day of their lives,” but these situations are typical occurrences for EMS providers. Their long shifts can be highly stressful and very unpredictable.

As a result, many lifesavers suffer from the stress of these traumatic incidences. Whether it’s nightmares or emotional distress, many are reluctant to reach out for help because of the stigma associated with mental wellness within the EMS community, and because they are not sure what resources there are for help. During this presentation, we will discuss the critical issue of mental wellness in EMS, review the risks of a stressful work environment, explain post-traumatic stress disorder, and review a quality of life scale that assesses the positive and negative effects work can have on your quality of life.

Presented by:

Kristin McCabe-Kline, MD, FACEP, FAAEM, ACHE
